Segmentation: The Resilience Challenge of Body, Mind and Society

Segmentation is how we describe what happens when one part of an organism ceases to cooperate with other parts of the same organism.  When we store emotional trauma as neural patterning and energetic blockage, and that blockage finds a home in a particular part of our energy system, causing health problems, tension and so on whenever that neural pattern is triggered, that is segmentation.  Right there, our neural, emotional and physical lives all become segmented.  In other words, some part of the system is disrupting all of the others.  Something is out of alignment.  As human beings, we are many-faceted creatures, and in order for us to live healthily and fulfill our potential, all of those facets have to find a way to pull together.  Consider the ancient Greek phalanx.  The Greeks discovered that when all of their soldiers stood and moved together in a coherent pattern, they were far more effective than if they were operating as individuals.  Segmentation is as though a small group of those soldiers decided to move in a different direction from all the others.

Dealing with this phenomenon, clearing these segmented blockages, is the first stage in many ancient systems of health and spiritual work.  Taoist dissolving meditation is a prime example.  This kind of work is the prerequisite for everything else, because as long as the body, mind and emotions are segmented, we cannot align our whole being toward achieving the state of being we desire.  Many of you are familiar with acupuncture, acupressure and tapping techniques such as EFT and TFT used to clear energetic-emotional blockages.  In the video below, you will see a modern take on this process from B.E.S.T. (Bio-Energetic Synchronisation Technique), a method that grew out of chiropractic medicine and has gone through forty years of refinement.  B.E.S.T. is a direct and effective technique which has proved able to address many deep-seated and otherwise-intractable physical, emotional and psychological problems.

Segmenting the Organism of Humanity

Interestingly, the same word, segmentation, has been used in another, related context: as the fundamental precursor to war in human society.  Dr. Raymond C. Kelly, a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, was dissatisfied with existing theories about the origins of war.  In his book Warless Societies and the Origin of War, he examines both archeological evidence and the anthropological studies of the warless societies which continue to exist today.  These warless societies have one thing in common: a lack of bounded groups.  A person is related to his or her parents and siblings and their families, marries into the family of his or her spouse, and has all the family relationships that implies- but there is no defined boundary, no one discrete group, no “us” that stands separate from “them.”  There is no clan group based on a specific lineage, no chief or king, no distinct unit that can organise to inflict violence on another unit.  Warless societies, then, are unsegmented.

Wars begin when segmentation begins.  It starts with the infliction of an injury, such as the murder of a group member.  This is generalised to be an assault upon the group, and the group exacts revenge on the same principle- that killing any members of the group to which the murderer belongs is the same as killing the murderer.  And with that, we have the fundamental basis of war- that members of the same group are objectified, substitutable pawns in service of their group identity and must suffer the consequences of their leaders’ action.  There are of course many more steps of development before we reach even the sort of warfare found in the Middle Ages, but this fundamental basis of alienation between segmented groups and objectification of the group’s membership has remained up to the present day.

Many ancient traditions regard humanity collectively as a great organism.  Kelly’s findings suggest that within that organism as well, segmentation, manifested in the formation of alienated groups, constitutes disease.  This is not a call to some sort of artificial sameness, but rather to accept diversity while transcending the basis of segmentation- alienation and objectification.  By transcending the dualism of “us” and “them” and instead accepting all people on the basis of our shared humanity, we undermine the basis of war, violence and victimisation.

Survival Mode in Macro and Microcosm

Survival Mode, the state of the traumatised individual, is fundamentally one of fear and anger at a hostile world.  In that state, we recognise only two categories of people- those who can help us and those who can hurt us.  We objectify others relative to what we can get out of them.  That is the same logic of objectification that exists in war, that exists wherever there is an “us” and “them.”  This worldview that is expressed in moments where our survival is imperiled becomes embedded in our social organisation.  It is the experience of being treated as objects that is behind the majority of human trauma.  It is a vicious cycle- trauma begets trauma.

We segment, we form exclusive groups, as a defence against the hostility of the world.  The more we treat each other as objects, the more we are traumatised.  The more we are traumatised, the more society segments, the deeper the alienation becomes, and the more trauma we inflict.  It is a cycle that reaches from the totality of the human species to our emotional, energetic and physical health, and back again.

Conclusion

By dissolving our internal segmentation, we cease to inflict that inner discord on the world, and by transcending our social segmentation, we reduce the internal segmentation of others.  Alignment begets alignment.  We align our inner state to conform to the outer world we want, and we align our thoughts and behaviours to create the inner state we want.

Ask yourself, how badly are YOU segmented inwardly?  What are you doing about it?  Do you consciously seek inner harmony on all levels?  Very few people do.  In fact, in my experience teaching Qi Gong, Hara and related disciplines, I’ve become convinced that the majority of people have become so used to unnatural tension that they don’t know what deep relaxation, deep harmony would feel like.

As you start to search for harmony, though, a funny thing happens: tensions and segmentation appear everywhere within you!  That’s recognizing where you’re really at and, although it may not feel so good, it’s a great sign!

The Healing Power Within Did Not Die When You Were Born!

An Astonishing Thing to Experience

As I lay there on my back on the treatment table with my left arm pointing straight up, the BEST practitioner would muscle-test the arm, first with my eyes open, then closed, then she would do something similar to my legs. For each of us in my group of six people – one of fourteen groups around the room – this preliminary phase of testing would determine how asymmetric our nervous and energy systems had become under the daily bombardment of external stimuli from without and discordant emotion from within.

It’s a totally astonishing experience – you’re trying to resist the practitioner as she pushes down on your arm in the testing process, but the moment she has you home in on an unpleasant emotion, an untruth or the thought of achieving a goal you’re in any way conflicted about, your muscles go weak as a kitten and she pushes your arm down easily. That was all the more astonishing for me since Gina, the practitioner working on me, is a pretty tiny woman! At other times, parts of your anatomy would “lock up” in the face of these unprocessed emotional energies. For me, that meant the extraordinary sensation of my usually limber feet suddenly refusing to turn inward when Gina had me focus on a particular goal. Then, once the proper synchronization protocol had been applied, the conflict between my goal and my nervous system disappeared and my feet would move again!

Where and when did all this happen? At the beginning of June, just a few short weeks ago, I was in Toronto for an amazing health workshop called Living Your Best.

How this Got Started

BEST or “Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique” is an astonishing holistic health system that, unlike so many other approaches that toss around the popular and marketable term “holistic”, actually IS holistic in that it takes into account how physical reality and consciousness affect each other on the deepest levels.

Developed by Dr. M.T. Morter Jr. and refined by him, his sons and their cadre of able and devoted practitioners over the past four decades, BEST is becoming known as a proactive health system of choice that is relatively easy to learn and capable of quickly and accurately diagnosing nearly anything. And the system had a curious beginning…

About 64 years ago, Dr. Morter’s brother was in an accident and the doctors doubted he would survive. In desperation, their father called in a chiropractor he knew. The chiropractor looked the boy over, said he knew what was wrong, treated him for a few minutes and the 9-year old boy, given up for dead, recovered fully in very short order. It was hardly surprising, then, that the future Dr. M.T. Morter Jr. decided then and there he would become a chiropractor when he grew up.

M.T., as I’ll call him here for short, got increasingly frustrated with conventional Chiropractic, however, because he felt he didn’t yet have all the tools he needed to help everyone – a frustration well known to most healers! After studying several other natural methods, he concluded that there was something wrong with the overall approach or mentality of the healing profession itself – the idea that adding something from the outside is the way to heal the human person.

The Foundations of BEST

Here is a summary of a remarkable lecture we heard him give on the real essence of health and healing. Naturally, any errors or omissions are my own:

• The Power that made your body didn’t die when you were born!
• You have a doctor within you that’s accessible 24/7 – that’s the healing power within
• When you make the commitment to return to “original design” [i.e., the way your mind-body organism is meant to function], this life-creating power goes into full swing on your side
• What compromises your ability to access this power is SEMO (Subconscious Emotional Memory Override) – this is caused by the inappropriate use of your five senses and messes up your emotional energies, creating negative consequences on the emotional and physical levels
• In essence, it creates what we usually call “ego”
• Ego should be an acronym for “Edge God Out” or, to put it another way, Defying the parameters of your original design
• The consequence of this is separation from Source, from that healing power within
• Specifically, ego compromises the feeling brain, that part of your brain that most directly influences your health
• Emotional negativity, even if unintentional, will create a defensive physiology, a physiology that is cut off from source and increasingly vulnerable to its environment
• All this saps energy and gives rise to symptoms that sap your energy even further
• This energy drain leads to energetic exhaustion, which itself is the cause of all disease
• This energy drain hits three systems particularly hard: the autonomic nervous system, the hormonal system and the immune system
• These systems were designed to protect you from short-term physical threats
• Unfortunately, negative thought and emotion activate these critical systems when they are not needed and keep them running on a continuous basis, leading to energetic exhaustion
• So these negative emotional energies create SEMO
• If this kind of interference were not happening, you would experience virtually automatic health, happiness and success
• Why? Because your subconscious doesn’t think and it will function perfectly if you stop interfering with Original Design [the way Source designed your organism to function]
• So disease tells you you’re operating under SEMO, not under the Original, Creative Design
• Want to feel better? You can start with this rule of thumb: “Never say anything to anyone that doesn’t make them feel immediately better”
• This is essentially the biblical, “Judge not and you will not be judged,” which is a 100% scientifically verifiable law of quantum physics
• All of this speaks to what you’re manifesting in your life as well
• Your subconscious brings into your experience whatever it focuses on
• And it doesn’t respond to anything except pictures and feelings
• Again, this is your feeling brain, so if SEMO is not interfering, you will attract or create in your life what you want, easily and automatically
• This is essentially the biblical principle that if you give thanks for something you want as if you already had it, it will come into your experience
• Again, that’s another fundamental principle of quantum physics
• Fortunately, diagnosing what’s going askew within your organism isn’t too difficult, precisely because your organism is practically shouting out the message
• And once that’s known, there are some simple adjustments that progressively allow you to restore your connection to Source and to return to the real of Original, Creative Design

Dr. M.T. Morter Jr. is a living example of what he preaches. At the age of 76, he takes no drugs and has no need to monitor his blood pressure. Naturally, this holistic health system includes nutritional elements as well, including an array of supplements designed to enhance the functioning of key systems and kept your body’s pH balance in the alkaline range (since disease can only flourish in an acidic environment).

To get a better idea what a BEST treatment might look like for you, just turn up your speakers and watch as BEST practitioner Dr. Don Williams takes you through one:

My own exposure to and involvement with BEST began in March, at the suggestion of my ever-proactive and inquisitive business partner, Kathy. The amazing and seemingly miraculous results I witnessed with my own eyes and the inner changes I’ve experienced myself convinced me that this avenue is worth pursuing. I admit that part of the attraction for me is the possibility of verifying a key hypothesis that has incredible implications for all of human life – the hypothesis that your body-mind organism has access to all the information you will every need AND that accessing this information in ways that are reliable and verifiably accurate is very feasible.

Think about that… it’s pretty mind-blowing.

Your “BEST” Bet for Health?

A couple of weeks ago I had the good fortune to attend a one-day health seminar in Toronto featuring Dr. Ted Morter.  Or, to be more precise, Dr. Ted Morter III.  Just to be clear who I’m talking about, I’ll refer to him as “Dr. Ted”.  The distinction is important because Dr. Ted’s father is the “Dr. Ted Morter” who founded a remarkable holistic healing system 40 years ago and is still teaching it as well.  Both the father and son are chiropractors, but their system goes way beyond the chiropractic you’re likely to experience next time you go to get your back fixed!

Dr. Ted was very engaging and, in fact, is truly a world-class speaker, quite apart from his healing abilities.  The family healing system, which has now been taught to tens of thousands of people worldwide, is called BEST, which stands for Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique.  Since the official description makes a LOT more sense than my hastily scribbled notes from the conference, I’ll quote it here:

” B.E.S.T. is a non-forceful, energy balancing hands on procedure used to help reestablish the full healing potential of the body.  Understanding the body makes no mistakes regarding health and longevity, B.E.S.T. principles acknowledge the concept of Interference we create with our conscious mind. This Interference caused imbalance in the autonomic nervous system leading to exhaustion of our organ systems over time.  Researched at major universities, taught in several Chiropractic Colleges and in professional continuing education seminars, B.E.S.T. is recognized as an effective healing science. The principles and concepts of Morter HealthSystem and B.E.S.T. technique are available to families, therapists and health care practitioners.”

The first demonstration Dr. Ted did was to take two volunteers from the audience of over 600 people.  Both had severely restricted neck and shoulder mobility, meaning they could only turn their heads to the side about 45 degrees (instead of 90) and were unable to raise either arm in front to a full vertical position.  All they could manage in the arm raising department was something that looked like a Nazi salute; they simply could not go higher without excruciating pain.

To treat them, Dr. Ted put them each in a particular therapeutic position called the M-Power March.  I’ll describe it here but please don’t try it without proper instructions.  You step forward with one leg, almost as if you’re lunging, then reach forward with the opposite hand at about 30-45 degrees.  There are some head and eye adjustments as well, along with some breathing instructions.  This unique practice is intended to “neurologically update the body”.  After a few attempts at it, both volunteers were astounded to discover they had regained their full range of neck and shoulder mobility!

The system uses Applied Kinesiology or “muscle testing” as a diagnostic tool, as well as many other treatment techniques involving light touching on specific muscle groups and energetic points.   Simply by trying the M-Power March, one woman in the audience spontaneously regained use of her voice and got up on stage in tears to tell everyone about how she had lost it and to thank Dr. Ted.  From what I was able to observe and from what friends of mine who have received BEST treatments have related to me, I believe this system is worth further investigation because:

  1. It is genuinely holistic.  In other words, it treats the human person as a mind-body organism and is acutely aware of the interplay of physical, emotional and energetic factors.
  2. It allows quick and apparently accurate diagnosis.
  3. It can treat problems on all levels of human functioning, whether physical, emotional or energetic, and can deal with symptoms no matter what the cause (the system talks about three principal causes of disease – timing, toxicity and thinking)
  4. Treatment is painless and results tend to be striking and immediate
  5. It does not fall into the classic trap: “If all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail”.

Here’s Dr. Morter Jr. (he’s the dad, i.e., Dr. Ted’s father… easy to get confused!) explaining the BEST system he has been developing for over 40 years now:
