Two Health Threats You Need to Know More About

Your Exposure to this Potent Hormone Disruptor

Many of us work hard to keep our bodies free from toxins – eating lots of fresh produce and drinking plenty of water. But those activities may not be as risk-free as you once thought. Today, we’re going to talk about two elements that are hazardous to your health: Bisphenol-A and genetically modified foods. What does this have to do with your personal resilience?  Well, if you don’t have your health, as they say, you don’t have anything.

Bisphenol-A, a substance used in plastics, poses a serious problem because it is an endocrine disruptor – it interferes with the body’s hormone system. Hormones are used in vital functions throughout the body, and endocrine disruptors can really do a number on the body: they can cause learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, deformation of the body, impaired sexual development and reverse gender effects.  The substance has also been linked to infertility and cancer.

Its effects on sexuality are perhaps the most strange, and they are manifesting themselves in both humans and animals. Bisphenol-A is being blamed for unusually early puberty rates in kids, and other reproductive abnormalities in fish and frogs. These include fish and frogs being born hermaphrodite, and (opposite to its effects on humans) the slowing of their sexual development.

The fact that certain substances affect sexual development and behavior is not exactly news, of course.  For centuries, Buddhist and Taoist monks in China have used Tofu – a somewhat more benign endocrine disruptor – to inhibit sexual desire.  Among authentic ancient traditions it’s common knowledge that if you want more libido, just eat garlic and red meat.  If you want less, pull out the veggies and bean curd!  The hormonal disruption we’re talking about here with Bisphenol-A is much more dangerous though…

The difficulty lies in avoiding this substance. There is simply no good way to know which plastics are Bisphenol-A free, so it is best to avoid plastic altogether. The biggest danger is in plastics that are are directly touching your food, so that the toxins can leech right into it. But avoiding plastic is much harder than you might think! Everything from a container of yogurt to a baggie full of fresh fruit involves plastic. Plastic coats the insides of milk and juice cartons, and receipts are literally coated in Bisphenol-A . When you can, buy items in glass containers – I get milk delivered in glass bottles, and you can get glass bottles for such things are mayonnaise, ketchup and salad dressing. There’s even glass tupperware! If you bring a paper bag to collect your produce at the grocery store, and make sure to wash your hands after handling receipts; you can really make a dent in your exposure to plastic!

Reassuringly, both the Health Canada and the FDA have taken steps to reevaluate the safety of this substance.

Genetically Modified Foods and Why to Steer Clear…

Genetically modified foods are everywhere these days. Walk into a grocery store, and 90% of the fresh produce you see has likely had its genes fiddled with. Manipulating and tampering with science we don’t completely understand could have severe unforeseen consequences, and several are already manifesting themselves

Already, we are witnessing the effects of unintended harm to other organisms – the delicate balance of Mother Nature is easily upset. Producing plants that are superpowered to be resistant to insects causes many breeds to die out and many more to mutate into “superbugs”. More highly toxic pesticides are therefore needed to kill these creatures, and more toxins end up in our systems.

The dramatic upswing in allergies these days may be attributed to genetically modified foods. Several studies are looking into the possibility that introducing genes into plants may create new allergens.

In the end, the most disturbing fact is that genetically modified foods have never been proven safe to eat. We’re essentially part of an experiment – a potentially very dangerous one. Another unsettling part of this issue is the ever-widening control over our food supply by corporations that are not trustworthy, and do not have people’s best interests at heart. In point of fact, most of your food is controlled, all the way from the farm to your dinner plate, by a small number of very powerful corporate interests whose behaviors give no evidence whatsoever of interest in your health and nutrition.

As People Age 

A funny thing happens when people get older. And by “older” I mean as early as their forties! They become more “top heavy” in the sense that their attention becomes more focused on their torso and head, while they increasingly ignore their lower body entirely and reduce it to a transportation system that takes them (by walking) from point A to point B. I remember vividly watching my own father in this regard. I only saw him try to “run” once and that was when I was about 5 years old, so he was still in his forties – it was during a game of hide-and-go-seek in our backyard and it wasn’t much of a run as I recall! But Dad got virtually no exercise and was a typical example of what I’m talking about here. Not that he was much overweight – he wasn’t. However, like so many people today after the age of forty, if he had fallen or suddenly had to “hit the deck” or dive to the ground, there would have been a horrible mess of ripped and torn muscles, tendons and ligaments, and probably some broken bones too!

The Taoist longevity tradition is constantly inviting us to consider the image of the child. Children are so full of Qi or “vital energy” and feel so close to the ground. They love to tumble and roll and engage their WHOLE bodies in continuous physical activity. The ancient Taoist masters developed forms of exercise to imitate these child-like dynamics on the hypothesis that they were congruent with LIFE, while the “top heavy” dynamic that sets in with so many adults is only congruent with DEATH. And, from the fact that they were able to reliably extend the human lifespan well past one hundred years in great physical, mental and emotional health, the Taoist scientists concluded their hypothesis was correct.

Flexibility and Your Lower Body

After decades of investigating the mind-body connection, I take it as axiomatic that mental and emotional flexibility – the kind so critical for maintaining any kind of objectivity, for avoiding judging things by appearances and also for building great relationships – depends to a very large extent on PHYSICAL flexibility. The “top heavy” crowd – those who have lost lower body flexibility, are afraid of toppling over or falling and who would be lost without chairs to sit on – are notoriously inflexible in their thought processes and emotional lives as well. Beyond that, they have far less energy than their more flexible counterparts. In a very real sense, they are in the process of losing their personal resilience  on all levels.

The Miracle of Stretching

As you probably know, Yoga (Indian Hatha Yoga, to be more precise) is one of the most brilliant methods of exercise ever devised.  Though it’s far more than a system of “exercise”  or “stretching” in the crude, Western sense of the words, today we’ll focus solely on that stretching component.  So watch the video below (it’s really amazing!!) and enjoy!  This viral video came out of Russia – the opening title says “Feline Yoga” and the end title says “The Art of Health Yoga Studio.  It’s not just people who love Yoga…”

The young lady in the video is going through part of a pretty standard Yoga workout and she does have great form!  The cat does too, but I suspect he/she was more interested in finding a lap to curl up in, something Yoga was not designed to provide 😉  Now consider what’s happening as she stretches and goes through these postures…

  • She’s stretching nearly all her muscles, both superficial and deep core.  As she does this, she’s increasing blood circulation throughout her body, toning her circulatory system and delivering more and more oxygen to her muscle tissue.  She is also toning her central nervous system by stretching the nerve fibers that run all through her tissues and is reconnecting her mind/consciousness to those tissues.  All of this keeps the muscles flexible and lubricated, so there is very little chance that sudden exertion will cause any damage or loss of mobility.
  • As the muscles stretch, so does the fasciae that surround the muscle groups.  This helps to ensure that fat cells don’t infiltrate and compromise the integrity of the fascia tissues.  Moreover, a significant part of her body’s energy system runs through the fasciae, so keeping them in good repair helps ensure that critical inter-cellular communication throughout the body is optimized.
  • Along with her muscles, she’s taking her tendons and ligaments through their ranges of motion as well.  And strong tendons and ligaments are critical for developing flexibility, avoiding soft tissue injury and for protecting  the joints.
  • Yet her torso is not being ignored either!  As she does these whole-body stretches, she is actually massaging her internal organs, thereby detoxifying them and feeding them with more blood, oxygen and Qi.
  • She is also taking her spine through its complete range of motion, preventing back pain and helping to circulate spinal fluid and Qi up the spinal column.
  • Finally, the weight-bearing quality of many of these postures (you try staying in “downward dog” posture -or should that be “downward cat” in this case? – for ten minutes or so and you’ll see what I mean!) helps to build and maintain her skeletal structure at the optimal balance of rigidity and flexibility.

YOUR Personal Resilience

So if you want to build your own personal resilience, you absolutely must stretch your body on a regular basis, because that’s the only way to FEED it with the abundant supplies of blood, oxygen and Qi that all its cells are screaming for.  This is what will allow you to maintain or regain your physical and emotional flexibility, build up your central nervous system, create healthy organs, keep your body in proper acid-alkaline balance and make you feel GREAT!

And the best part of all??  You don’t even need the cat!!

Startling Results with World’s Easiest Detox Method

Just wanted to share with you an extraordinary experience I had yesterday…

I had the good fortune to stumble upon a local practitioner of Ionic Foot Bath Detoxification, easily one of the most extraordinary detoxification methods I’ve ever seen.  If you’ve been around this blog for any time at all, you know that detoxification is one of the strongest contributors to your personal resilience  and that without it you have little hope of reaching your health goals in the long term.  In fact, all of the longest lived and most vibrant natural health exponents of the 20th century that I can think of off hand were people who practiced regular detoxification.  As the saying goes, “success leaves clues”!  So do yourself a favor and get absolutely clear on one thing from the outset – you must make the decision right now that you will detoxify your body regularly.

As you know, I’ve used and passed on to you a number of extraordinarily effective detoxification solutions that are easily available to you commercially.  Most of these require an investment in the $100-$300 range and require a willingness on your part to change your diet for 1-4 weeks and possibly fast for periods of time.  Today I’d like to share with you an extraordinary detox method that cost me far less and took 30 minutes!  Let me say from the outset that I will continue doing colon cleanses in addition to the method I’ll describe below because they don’t do exactly the same thing – you will probably need more than one detox method.  That said, what I’m about to show you is a great place to start and I plan to start using it regularly.

My own detox treatment yesterday began with a full body Shiatsu massage.  In this kind of massage, the practitioner uses mainly their thumbs to get a read on how efficiently your blood and lymph circulation systems are working.  In addition to that, they learn all about where you’re holding tension, where too much typing (like writing this blog!) has built up scar tissue in your arms, and which major muscle groups are too tight.  And, of course, if you’ve had any major or even minor physical injuries in the past, believe me, they’ll find them!

So in part the massage is there to improve your blood and lymph circulation, but in fact it was also setting the stage for the main detox event itself – an Ion Cleanse Foot Bath.  Now I had ZERO familiarity with this modality going into the treatment, so when my practitioner placed two tubs of water in front of my chair, I did the natural thing – I put one foot in each.  Wrong move!  Turns out the second tub was for the post-treatment rinse.

After I immersed my feet in the right tub, the practitioner placed a small electrical device into the water.   This is the ion generator, which adds something like 14-16 volts of current and creates the dynamic that allows the water to pull massive amounts of toxins out of the soles of your feet.  Your feet, as you may know, have about four thousand pores and are one of the body’s most effective detoxing surfaces.  So, as I sat there, not knowing what to expect, I found the water after ten minutes had turned a distinctly tan color.  And no, it wasn’t from dirty feet 🙂  By the end of twenty minutes, the water was so dark brown (with traces of green, white and orange…) that I couldn’t even see my feet anymore!  All of that coloration was toxic material that Ionic Foot Bath had pulled from my body!   See for yourself:

Yes, that’s the water after I was done with it.  There is a whole color code that tells you where in your body the toxins came from or what they are, but there’s no room here to go into that.  I was astounded!  After all, I have a great diet with great supplements and I had done two large scale detox sessions in the last nine months or so.  And THIS was still in there???  Ouch.  But there was more…

The photo above is a bit of a mystery.  You’ll see in the center a small orange-brownish fragment of something inside a ziploc bag.  The photo was taken looking down through a glass table, so it’s a bit hard to see.  Apparently Ionic Foot Bath Detox often pulls some interesting stuff out of the body.  Sometimes that’s yeast or parasites, but not in this case.  It can also pull out the remnants of past surgeries, such as old stitches or other surgical materials left inside.  Could this be a remnant of the toe surgery I had at the age of five?  Maybe I’ll never know.  The one thing I do know is that, whatever it is, I won’t miss it!

If you go on the internet, you’ll naturally find some controversy around this or any other detoxification method.  There are lots of people out there with a lot to lose if you start using a technology like this to eliminate your allergies, your fibromyalgia, your chronic fatigue, pain from old injuries, or even cancers.  And, of course, no one is allowed to claim this will “cure” anything.  However, there is an astounding body of evidence to suggest that this just might be one of the top health maintenance tools you would like to have in your back pocket.

This is Holy Week for most Christians and a time when tens of millions of people will be fasting.  So what better time to do a two-part series on the value of fasting?  Why two-part?  Because there are two main reasons people fast…

We fast in search of better health or we fast as a method of spiritual purification.  As we’ll see the two are related.  Today, though, we’ll focus on fasting to create health, immunity and longevity….

What Exactly is “Fasting”?


That’s not as stupid a question as you may think.  That fact is, there are lots of misconceptions out there about fasting.  Some people believe that simply abstaining from certain foods or food groups, either temporarily or permanently, is “fasting”.  That’s most definitely not fasting.  That’s “abstinence”.  


Fasting is going without eating solid food, and sometimes liquid nourishment as well, for a defined period of time.  That could be a matter of hours, days or weeks, depending on what you’re trying to achieve and how.  


The Health Benefits of Fasting

So why would you bother?  Perhaps because there are few if any other health tools in your arsenal that give you such bang for the buck.  Here are just some of the primary benefits of fasting:

  1. Initiates a detoxification / cleansing reaction in the body, enabling you to rid yourself of accumulated toxins.
  2. Enables weight loss.
  3. Puts the digestive system, and the body as a whole, into “rest mode”, allowing the energy usually devoted to digestion to be diverted to healing.
  4. Clears up skin problems and the whites of your eyes.
  5. Naturally lowers blood pressure without drugs.
  6. Makes it easier to overcome bad habits and addictions, and to make a fresh start with a new, healthier diet and lifestyle.
  7. Reduces inflammation throughout your body.
  8. Reduces water retention throughout your body.

Varieties of Fasting

You may have heard of many types of fasting for health, including water fasts, juice fasts, total fasts and many others.  Natural health pioneers like Dr. Bernard Jensen and Victor Irons used fasting together with colon cleansing to achieve remarkable results for their patients and clients for about half a century each!  More telling is that both of these great pioneers lived healthy lives to nearly age one hundred.

Warning: Avoid the Traps!



There are several traps with fasting, so here’s my advice on how to get started:

  1. Check in with your physician or a licensed health-care provider to help you get started.  This is particularly important if you’ve never done this before or have a pre-existing medical condition.
  2. Be clear on what you would like to achieve with the fast.  This will help you select the proper type.
  3. Don’t make it up on your own: follow a program based on reliable and tested information.
  4. Don’t overdo it.  Fasting for just a few days can provide enormous benefit!
  5. Don’t become addicted to fasting and cleansing!  These are activities you should do periodically, not constantly.  Once your fast is over, start giving your body all the nutritious food it needs to stay healthy!

Colon Cleansing – Why and How to Get Started

It’s no secret that our bodies are piled high with toxins these days, toxins from our corrupted food chain and water supply, the air we breathe, the household cleansers we use and any number of other sources.

So if you’re serious about your health, immunity and overall resilience, you do need to be thinking about incorporating a regular detoxification program into your life.  And the best place to start for most people is definitely the colon.  Why?

  • Over time, thanks partly to poor dietary habits, not all your bodily waste is excreted and some of the leftover ends up attached to the walls of your intestines, where it eventually becomes toxic and leaches those toxins into your bloodstream
     
  • This leads to a less efficient colon, longer “transit times” for waste matter through your colon and more toxic build-up

So colon cleansing sounds like a great thing to do for your health, right?  Unfortunately though, very few beginners have any idea where to start and what to do…
